SOULFLY (br) - Max Cavalera (Juin-2009/VF-EV)

Line-up
: Max Cavalera (Chant, Guitare), Marc Rizzo (Guitare), Bobby Burns (Basse), Joe Nunez (Batterie)

Discographie : Soulfly (Album - 1998), Primitive (Album - 2000), 3 (Album - 2002), Prophecy (Album - 2004), Dark Ages (Album - 2005), Conquer (Album - 2008)

M-I Interviews du groupe : Max Cavalera (Juin-2004), Max Cavalera (Juin-2009/VF-EV)

Metal-Impact. Bonjour Max.

Par exemple aujourd’hui nous avons appris « For Those About To Rot », que nous n’avons jamais jouée live.

MI.

MI.

==================== ENGLISH VERSION ====================

Metal-Impact. Hi Max. You’ll play four shows in France this month. Do you have a kind of special relationship with the French audience?
Max Cavalera. Yeah, from a long time it’s been building up, a good relationship with France, from the Sepultura days, for example Roots was an album that brought Sepultura to the world, especially in France, French people have always been interested in what I was doing through the years, so it continues with Soulfly. So, it’s great!

MI. You’ll be at the Hellfest this month too. What kind of show can we expect from Soulfly?
Max. It’s been a strong tour, so far we gone that week, we’ll play a lot of new stuff, along with old stuff too. I think the tour is concentrated on Conquer, a lot of songs from Conquer that the crowd wants to hear, and depending on the audience reaction…I think it will be great!

MI. Do you like to play in such big festivals?
Max. Yes, I think it’s fun. Soulfly has been playing on such festivals, some on this tour, in Germany, and Soulfly is a band that likes to play in festivals, because we can take the heat.

MI. Conquer came out last year. Do you still enjoy this album so far?
Max. Oh yeah, and I’m still learning. Today we learned a new song, “For Those About To Rot” we will play for the first time today, it’s an album that’s still growing on me, on the fans as well…There are some really good tunes, “Blood Fire War Hate” is a really great opening song, that get the whole crowd chanting, even before the band is on, that’s pretty strong you know!

MI. Soulfly came out as a surprise band when you left Sepultura. Are you proud that so many years later, it’s now considered as a major act on the metal scene?
Max. Well it took a long time, but it’s ok, because most things don’t happened overnight, and it applies to Soulfly. A neverending battle of mine, with music to show to the fans, and my music continued after Sepultura, there is life after Sepultura, and Soulfly is that life, and now it’s great because Soulfly dominates the metal community, in his own way, at it’s own place, and I’m very proud of it, I’m very proud of the Soulfly fans, around the world, because they are the best fans, I see Soulfly tattoos every night, in numbers…

MI. And the fact that it took so many years to attract such a following isn’t more enjoyable than if the fans had accepted Soulfly from the beginning?
Max. Yeah, I think it’s a special feeling, it took a lot of years, and a lot of shows pounding in the head, and now it’s there, with people coming to see the show, they wanna see Soulfly, and it’s something I enjoy very much.

MI. Many musicians have played in Soulfly through the years. Do we still have to consider Soulfly as a one man project or as a real entity?
Max. I think it’s both, I think it’s a good thing. You know, it’s like a rock, you don’t necessarily know what it is, you like it, you don’t really know why…Many musicians have played with me, now we’re a lot more stable, I hope it won’t change. If it changes, I will continue again, because it’s my life you know.

MI. Let’s talk about your first eponymous album. It came out very quickly after the split of Sepultura. Was it a way to exorcise your anger or was it just a question of high creativity?
Max. A combination of both. There were a lot of things I just wanted to say at that moment, and a lot of creation in the air, that moment was the right one to write songs like “Eye For An Eye”, “Bleed”, “No Hope No fear”, “Tribe”, and they became instant classics you know. “Eye For An Eye” is probably my favourite song, this song ends every show, it’s a classic, I cannot imagine a Max show without “Eye For An Eye”.

MI. Dark Ages is still considered as the best Soulfly ever by many fans. It was very raw and aggressive. Do you agree with that, and is Soulfly the vehicle of Max’s state of mind?
Max. I don’t have a favourite album. And I think it’s the same for the fans. Many of them like different albums, for instance when I play “Primitive” on stage, the crowd goes really wild. I’m glad some of them like Dark Ages a lot, it was the right album to do at that time.

MI. For you it’s just an album among the others?
Max. You know I change my mind from time to time, for a long time Prophecy was my favourite album. Right now I don’t have one. It’s just a collection of records…

MI. Cavalera Conspiracy saw you playing with your brother again. How was the recording process, and did you find back the feeling you had with him in Sepultura?
Max. The feeling was very the same, the joy, the passion. And playing with the same fire was right there when we made the album, and when we played live, and people can see it on the videos, and can see it on our face, we’re bound to be playing together, and I think it was the right decision to make it into a project, it’s not a permanent thing, the way we did it was something special, we will not make many albums, but sure another one. It’s a special thing you know.

MI. Can we compare Cavalera Conspiracy to Nailbomb, as a very transitory project, a fun act?
Max. I think it’s pretty different, you know, Nailbomb was just messing around with industrial music a little bit, me and Alex, trying to imitate a bit bands like Ministry in our own way. It was Max sound with Fudge Tunnel sound while Cavalera Conspiracy is me and Igor back to the roots of metal, I think that’s why the album got so many classic moments, like the classic era of Sepultura.

MI. After so many years playing live, do you still enjoy life on the road?
Max. Yeah, I do you know! I like it, every night is different, and the fans reactions are different from place to place…Soulfly is creating an event, every night is like a Metal party. It starts in a way and ends in a completely different way, everybody is wet in the end, but completely happy. And everything happens in the floor, in the mosh-pit, and in the end, everybody leaves happy, and satisfied, which is the way it should be.

MI. What about the next Soulfly album? Got any ideas or some songs already written?
Max. No, not entire songs, just some bits and pieces. I’d like it to be a shorter album, maybe only ten and more direct songs, maybe in the Reign In Blood vein, in your face, direct. Less intermissions, and less space between the songs, to drop a bomb and see what happens.

MI. Let’s talk about Sepultura now. Tell us more about the first years before the recording of Bestial Devastation, the creation of the band, the first rehearsals and your main influences at that time?
Max. At that time it was just me and Igor, we invented the name, Out on a Motorhead song, “Dancing On Your Graves”, grave meaning Sepultura, we were doing a lot of practice in our basement in our house, with some friends, even when we weren’t even a band, we played under the name of Sepultura. Our main influences at that time were Venom, Slayer, Hellhammer and Discharge. A lot of fast stuff you know. I was very much into Slayer’s EP “Haunting The Chapel”, it’s one of the best thing Slayer has ever done.

MI. How do you judge the first Sepultura’s album, Morbid Visions now, after more than 20 rears?
Max. I think it’s still good stuff, the production was crap, but the songs are still good. A tune like “Troops Of Doom” is still played, even on this tour and it gets a great reaction.

MI. Arise is considered as many fans as the best Sepultura album ever, do you agree with that?
Max. No, again I don’t really have a favourite Sepultura album. I think that if I had to pick one, it would be Chaos AD indeed…The perfect combination between fastness and heaviness. I like Arise too, as Beneath The Remains…

MI. Roots was a major success in France, becoming gold. How can you explain Sepultura’s popularity in France?
Max. Well, like I said, I was accepted in France first, I don’t really know why, I think maybe it’s because of the exotic flavour of Brazil. Maybe people in France are more open minded I guess…

MI. Just a few words about the split up of the band. Do you still feel bitter about it?
Max. No, I think it was bound to happen. Everybody react on impulse and unfortunately it happened, but it gave birth to Soulfly, which was another great thing in my life, I see it more peacefully now.

MI. I know you’re a great football fan. Next year the world cup will take place in South Africa, are you confident in the Brazilian team?
Max. I think we need a new coach. I don’t like the actual coach, I don’t think it’s a good choice. I think we need Scolari’s back!
